Michel Seuphor

Born 1901 and died 1999.

Belgian-born painter, graphic artist, writer, and editor who became a French citizen in 1954.

He was born in Antwerp and in 1925 moved to Paris, where he was one of the founders of the Cercle et Carré association of abstract artists in 1929 and editor of its journal.

His own paintings were in a geometrical abstract style (he also made prints in a variety of techniques), but he is better known for his writings.

They include a standard book on abstract art, L'Art abstrait: ses origines, ses premiers maîtres (1949), and dictionaries of abstract painting (1957) and modern sculpture (1959), all of which have been translated into English. Seuphor also wrote poetry.
